Incongruous

A trellis of verdant roses
creeps slowly
up the knobby ridges of my spine
Clinging fast to empty spaces
where the heart’s grandeur, like brilliant stars, would shine
Every night I traverse this Rorschach devastation
To die of grief in the light of day
Leaving fodder for the wild roses
plucked at will by all who pass this way

*One of my favorite poets is Robert Frost, and to this day I still love to recite his Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening poem every time we get the first snow of the winter. I was reading his Desert Places poem and was inspired to write something similar to his style of poetry (even though I actually dislike rhyming poems if they’re written by anyone other than Robert Frost.) I drew on my own experiences for this poem, as I’m sure Robert drew on his for his poems.

Hello and welcome to my page~ My name is Larisa--a very common Slavic name that was either derived from the Latin word hilaris, meaning "cheerful," or from the Greek city of Larissa, meaning "strong fortress." Born in Ukraine, I emigrated with my family to America when I was still a small child and now make my home in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Growing up immersed in two vastly differing cultures led me to have a burning curiosity about people all over the world. Stemming from said curiosity, I have fallen in love with traveling to other countries, meeting new people and delving into their culture, exploring new cities, and of course, dining on the local cuisine! If I cannot escape into a different country, then my next favorite method of adventure is to lose myself in a spectacular book. I enjoy books of all genres--from fiction and novels, to biographies and ethnographies. As long as it captures my fancy and holds me spellbound the entire time, I will burn through the book like a forest fire! Because of this penchant for reading and travel, coupled with my love of deep and mysterious things, I have been often called a dreamer and I find the title suits me. With that being said, I invite you to stay a while, perhaps make yourself a cup of tea and linger through my posts and feel free to comment or share a thought :-)

    1. What a beautiful comment!! It’s words like these that revive me on here. WordPress has some of the best souls here, thank you ♥️ Robert Frost holds a special place in my heart even though my poetry instructor in college thought he was a joke. I wish all the same to you—all the light and love and health 🙌🏻

      1. You’re welcome. I am thankful that as a part of those reading your work, I can give back from the much you give to us 🙂 . I concur, there’s a wonderful inspirational community here in WordPress. Perhaps it’s as they say, the joke may be on the poetry instructor 😀 , but of course respectfully it was their opinion 🤷🏽‍♂️. Thank you 🙂 I wish the same for you as well.
Also, typos keep haunting me so pardon me if I make any more 😂 if I comment again, which I have no doubt I will with your awesome work 👍🏾.

  2. Just like the verdant vines that twist around the trellis, there is something so deep, yet darkly twisted in the symbolism here!
The verdant, vulnerable, green soul; the surrender to vines; feeling exposed to and at the mercy of passers by and of course, that terrible beauty in the entirety of the poem, with the darkness in the spaces that the vines seem to house within each twist of theirs… Gorgeous, gorgeous and breathtaking in its imagery!

Dare I say, Frost would have been moved too! – I always have loved his simple, Romantic poetry, because of its underlying dark tone.

    1. I LOVE how you understood the entirety of the poem!!! Your comment left me breathless! Yes, the feeling of being exposed to passers by who employ the freedom to pick apart at will or try to take what they want without realizing anything of what’s going on underneath..the experience is a cruel one.

I love how you see right through to the heart of everything I write. ♥️♥️♥️

    1. I adore that snowy poem 😍 it makes me want to go inhabit a world where technology isn’t as far reaching as it is today so maybe we’d capture some of the magic of living back. Idk. I’m going to start rambling.

Thank you, that is a very humbling compliment. ♥️
