Untamed

You glance my way and
a wild stampede of heartbeats
escapes from within the cage
of my ribs. I cannot seem
to corral my thoughts, they ride
freely upon the rushing horde—
do I hold your gaze or look away?
You laugh at something your
companion says, flashing straight
white teeth like the picket fence
around the garden in my
memories, where we picked sugar
snap peas during lazy summer
afternoons. I catch my breath
and look away, attempt to calm
the trembling of my limbs.

Hello and welcome to my page~ My name is Larisa--a very common Slavic name that was either derived from the Latin word hilaris, meaning "cheerful," or from the Greek city of Larissa, meaning "strong fortress." Born in Ukraine, I emigrated with my family to America when I was still a small child and now make my home in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Growing up immersed in two vastly differing cultures led me to have a burning curiosity about people all over the world. Stemming from said curiosity, I have fallen in love with traveling to other countries, meeting new people and delving into their culture, exploring new cities, and of course, dining on the local cuisine! If I cannot escape into a different country, then my next favorite method of adventure is to lose myself in a spectacular book. I enjoy books of all genres--from fiction and novels, to biographies and ethnographies. As long as it captures my fancy and holds me spellbound the entire time, I will burn through the book like a forest fire! Because of this penchant for reading and travel, coupled with my love of deep and mysterious things, I have been often called a dreamer and I find the title suits me. With that being said, I invite you to stay a while, perhaps make yourself a cup of tea and linger through my posts and feel free to comment or share a thought :-)

                1. Yes you did, as is often the case if I’m checking my phone in the early mornings. Im working on not being on my phone while driving, but traffic in the PNW is That Bad that sometimes I goof off on the phone while I’m in traffic.

                    1. I love how you tell me you work North of Boston as if I have any idea what that even looks like lol. I read an article once that ranked WA state as the #1 state for worst traffic. Yep. Yay us.

  1. Really fine poem – very Americana imagery – cattle, picket fences – I can see it in my imagination. In England the images would be a flock of sheep and ancient hedgerows – that gives me an idea.
    Keep well!

    1. I visited London this summer, and we went out to see Bath and Stonehenge as well. Yes, there were plenty of picturesque sheep grazing on rolling hills. I grew up in the country, with horses and cattle and plenty of dirt roads.

  2. Or should I have written mustangs instead of cattle? I’m working out how someone would have teeth like a gnarled hedgerow – some people do. A picket fence simile shows a better awareness of good dental hygiene.

  3. I like the contrast you have written here. You show the obvious signs of civilization with things such as cages, corrals, straight white teeth (like fences), and gardens. These are countered by the stampede of heartbeats, free riding thoughts, and so on. Very well written, I enjoyed it!

    1. You are indeed lucky to have such a gem, for not everyone gets to experience a love where the “rushing stampede of wild heartbeats” escapes your ribs when you capture the gaze of your lover, even after you’ve been together for some time! That is truly the stuff of poetry and love songs 💕
